Cheap Shelving for your Bookshop

An idea on bookshop shelving
When considering shelving, both what types to install and where to put them, one of the first things to consider is color. As bookshelving will occupy most of the visible wall space the color that you go with is not a decision that you should glance over. It needs to be well thought out and inline with the overall feel you want to give your store.
Color Choice
Will your bookshop be merely a storehouse for educational or reference type material or will it be a cozy hangout with cool music and snacks? If the second option is what your considering, that is, you're hoping to create a soft, relaxing atmosphere where folks will want to spend a lot of time (and tell all their friends) then color is of great importance. You may have considered simply building some shelving using wood from the local home center and not even bothering to stain it. This tactic helps your bookshop to give off a very distinctive ambience; that of a construction site. If your books are mainly of a very tight niche, appealing to builders and mechanics then it would be a terrific decision. If the literary world if more than a passing interest then you may want to give it more thought.
A touch of background. I built a used bookstore/coffee shop from scratch and spent every day during a four year stretch sitting in it. I've also visited hundreds of others in many different countries. I know a thing or two about bookshops. I have one strong recomendation on color and a minor one on the exact type of shelving you may want to consider. The color choice for an ambient, relaxing spot should be dark brown. It is a calm color that evokes richness and strength. The exact type of shelving, and as a bonus this is a cheap shelving suggestion, would be the Billy system from Ikea. What? Ikea? Yes - sir and I'll tell you why. These shelves are exactly what you need. Durable, very easy to assemble, very easy to maintain, great rich color and can be mixed and matched to your needs as far as sizing goes. I've used these in my old shop and I'll tell you, even with a solid row of heavy hardcovers the shelves never once needed to be replaced due to sagging. But even if they did - replacements are available.
