Cool Chairs

The topic of cool chairs can go on forever. My opinion on what makes a cool chair may be very different than yours. You may be a fan of seventies disco style or prefer an antique chair, while I may prefer chairs that are more outlandish or made from a certain material. I'll try and cover a bit of ground here and give you a few different ideas on cool chairs. If you're looking for ideas on how to furnish your funky new bachelor pad that you've found the right spot.

How about cool chairs made from found or re-purposed materials.

There's nothing like firing up the imagination than by taking something that you've come across on your weekend treasure hunt and turning it into a chair. It's often not as difficult as you may think. Take this amazing looking piece made from an old window blind, nicely re-finished, a few pieces of plywood and that's about it. Comfortable and cool and what a conversation piece. About ten bucks to make this and I bet you could sell it for one hundred and fifty in a second. And talk about recyclable - just pull it apart and chuck it into the fireplace.

While we're on about chairs from re-purposed material, how about a simple steel barrel. Take a discarded barrel, make some cool cuts, safety up the edges, and you're good to go with another major conversation piece. Here's another opportunity to take something that you can find for free, paint it up, add a $5.00 cushion, a $10.00 leg set, $2.00 rubber trim and slap a hundred dollar price tag on it for your next yard sale. Don't forget to give it an exotic sounding European name. Easy peasy, money in the bank.

While not made from found materials I had to include this amazingly cool chair, the gravity chair. This is the most comfortable chair I've come across. It would take all of ten seconds to fall asleep in this beaut. This chair comes from the designers at Varier. Who ever thought sitting in a chair would be such a memorable experience.

Here's one for the guys. I can imaging Tim the Toolman going ape over this beast. Imagine rolling up to the kids soccer game in this tank of a chair. Surely a gold medal winner in the category of cool chairs.

We opened the piece with a quick mention of disco inspired chairs so we might as well include one of the most famous chair designs ever. The famous Ball Chair seen in a lot of seventies rec rooms. It's one of those rare pieces of furniture than are so beautiful in it's simplicity. Take a ball and cut a hole in it. Wonderful.

We'll finish off today with one that is simply weird. The Mona chair. I'm not sure if this falls into the category of cool chairs or not - you decide. The idea seems strange, take an object that you are least likely to ever sit on and turn it into a chair. I can imagine a lot of folks sitting on a lot of weird things but never would I have guessed that somebody would sit on the Mona Lisa. The way this chair is designed it can actually hang on the wall as an art piece when not in use - now that is cool. Made by Kwang Ho Le.

There's nothing like curling up with a good book while sitting in a cool chair but what if its the chair doing the curling. I can't quite figure out if this chair is funky or just dumb. What do you think? I would mind giving it a test run but I have a feeling it would cost a few pennies for this curly wood chair.
