Glass Shelves

Contemporary and classic at the same time, nothing beats glass shelves, but only for certain products. If you're setting up shelves for storage only then glass shelves may not be the best choice but if it is to display shoes of if you are choosing a shelving style for your living room then glass shelves would be a great choice. For the shoe option slatwall glass shelves may be an idea worth considering.

Of course glass shelves need to fit in with the type of decor that you already have. A country home or a home decorated in a rustic fashion may not be the best place for glass. A modern apartment or condo would be a great fit as would any contemporary living room.

In the past safety was a concern when considering glas shelves for a home that had small children but this is no longer the case. Most newer glass is hardened and has the corners rounded. I have a youngster myself and of course a few glass shelves and his banging on them was never a concern. In fact he's made a few scrathces on some of our wooden pieces but the glass still looks like new.

One of the best places to consider glass shelving is the bathroom. The clean slick look, especially if it has a light green or blue tint has a built in association with water - being clear it has a natural fluid feel. Also one typicaly would not display bulkier items in a bathroom, smaller items suit glass shelves the best. A floating glass shelf will have a terrific clean look to it and coupled with mirrors will make a great place to display your objects. A final note about glass shelves being perfect for the bathroom - the constant humidity can be a problem for more pourous types of shelving. Wicker in particularly will soak up the moisture and be a potential location for mold to grow. Glass being so easy to clean will always maintain its antiseptic quality.

Sleek Glass, there's nothing like it

Glass shelves aren't just for the bathroom. If you collect books wooden shelves may be more appropriate but if your collecting habits are focused around porceline figurines or vintage perfume bottles then you probably already know that glass is the way to go. As mentioned above, glass can come in different tints. Imagine your collection of antique perfume bottles resting on thick blue green glass shelves - they would look amazing. I've also seen glass shelves that are mounted into a block of wood on one side and left open on the other (for clarity, I'll include an image of this below). It's the perfect shelf for something whimsical - to lighten up the atmosphere of a room that may be used for entertaining.

If you are redesigning an existing room and want an updated look then you may want to consider glass shelves. It could make a great place for some of your entertainment appliances. A nice amplifier or pvr will look even richer when sitting on its own floating glass shelf. It can really modernize an older room. The possibilities are endless with all of the different colors, shapes and thicknesses that you can get. Have some fun with it.

A note on cleaning glass shelves - it's something you'll want to do regularly, especially if you live in a house with a smoker. Dust and tar make for a grimy surface when left to build up. If your shelves are lightly dusted every few days then the dust will never get a chance to accumulate but if left alone for weeks at a time then you will have a buildup and they will not only look dingy but be much tougher to clean. That being said, glass is about the easiest type of shelving to clean that you will find. Simple Windex will do the job - no need for any special purpose (and more expensive) cleaners.
